NMITE showcases updated timber courses 

The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) has launched its updated timber technology, engineering and design offering. 

The Timber TED short courses aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to design and build sustainably.

Delivered from the NMITE Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT), the short courses allow construction professionals to study while continuing with full-time work. 

Steve Bertasso, assistant professor at NMITE, said: “The Timber TED courses deliver industry-relevant content to upskill current and future leaders in the advancement of timber as a sustainable building product. 

“Created through industry-led research, confirmed recently by the Timber in Construction roadmap, CATT aims to change the building industry to include more timber as we focus on carbon neutrality metrics in construction.”

All NMITE’s timber courses are endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and Timber Development UK (TDUK).

CIOB CEO Caroline Gumble recently visited a retrofit training workshop at Anglia Ruskin University, run in collaboration with NMITE. 

Commenting on the workshop, Gumble said: “It’s been heartening to see the retrofit workshop in action. There is a huge need in the industry to develop and offer access to these skills, not to mention the urgent need within society to improve the quality and sustainability of our housing stock. 

“Additionally, the way in which the training is being delivered is an excellent example of the collaborative approach and social value that construction can deliver with, for example, 44% of the training places going to those from disadvantaged and under-represented groups.”
