Neurodiversity training launched for construction workers
New programme aims to help address the challenges facing neurodiverse construction professionals
The National Federation of Builders (NFB), in partnership with Interclass, Genius Within, and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), has launched a neurodiversity training programme.
The programme is designed to build knowledge and skills around neurodiversity in the workplace, supporting a culture of inclusivity within the construction industry.
Research published by NFB in 2023 revealed that one in four construction workers identify as neurodiverse. However, almost 40% of neurodiverse workers in construction have not told their employer about their condition.
“The NFB’s Neurodiversity in Construction research report revealed that neurodiversity is largely prevalent amongst construction workers, yet the findings suggested that stigma and barriers still exist,” commented Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB.
“This training offers an important opportunity to create work environments where neurodiverse employees can thrive, enhancing wellbeing and productivity across the sector.”
Sara Barnes, preconstruction and marketing manager at Interclass, added that the new training programme is all about making sure everyone feels understood, valued, and supported.
“What makes it unique is that it is specifically designed for the construction industry, addressing its challenges, and giving people practical tools and ideas they can take back to their workplaces,” Barnes said.
“With a variety of formats and courses to suit everyone, the goal is to encourage as many companies as possible to embrace it and roll it out across their teams.
“We all work with people, and the more we understand each other, the greater the opportunity for everyone to reach their full potential.”
