Kier strengthens social value commitment
Contractor has pledged to create “meaningful impact” in local communities
Kier has joined the Buy Social Pledge, reinforcing its commitment to supporting social enterprises and delivering social value through its supply chain.
The Buy Social Pledge, launched by Social Enterprise Scotland in 2023, brings together corporate businesses, SMEs, academic institutions, and public sector bodies to engage with a range of social enterprise suppliers.
By signing the pledge, organisations commit to five actions:
1. Recognise fair work for all – champion fair work principles; prioritise Real Living Wages; narrow the gender pay gap; foster equality, diversity and inclusion; and eradicate zero-hour contracts.
2. Environmental impact for a sustainable tomorrow – embrace a net zero policy.
3. Support social enterprises – onboard and promote social enterprises within supply chains, helping to foster an ecosystem that nurtures and supports these organisations.
4. Prompt payment, resulting in ethical business.
5. Measure positive impact – transparency and accountability by reporting annual spend with social enterprises.
Driving positive change
Phil McDowell, regional director for Kier Construction North and Scotland, said: “Kier is delighted to join the Buy Social Pledge and is committed to creating meaningful impact in our local communities.
“By supporting social enterprises across Scotland, we aim to help build a fair, inclusive and sustainable society, delivering lasting positive change where we work and live.”
Jamie Lawson, strategic partnerships and engagement manager at Social Enterprise Scotland, added: "We are thrilled to welcome Kier Construction to the Buy Social Pledge.
“Their commitment demonstrates the powerful role the construction industry can play in supporting social enterprises and the communities in which they work.
“We look forward to working closely with Kier Construction to maximise the social and environmental impact of their projects.”
